Welcome to the monthly newsletter.

In this space we'll be sending monthly tips on how to reduce maintenance service calls and take care of minor issues.

Here are some tips to get ready for the coming winter.

If you have a gas wall heater, clean the dust and dirt from inside and be sure the pilot is lit.

Every gas wall heater has an access door at the bottom. Open it and look inside. Clean out all dust and debris, using a hand brush or vacuum. Then look for the pilot light. If it's not burning, you can light it yourself (here's a YouTube video that shows how: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E91zAUyI_nM )

If you're not comfortable lighting it yourself, you can call PGE to schedule an appointment. They'll come to your apartment, light the pilot and do a gas safety check ( https://www.pge.com/en_US/residential/customer-service/home-services/pilot-light/pilot-light-service-appointments.page )

If you have an electric wall heater, vacuum dust and debris from the fins and around the base.

It's not unusual for an electrical wall heater to let off a burning smell for a short time on the first lighting after a long summer. But if the burning smell persists, turn it off and submit a service request.

Also, if you have an electric wall heater, be aware that it draws a lot of power, and many of our apartments don't have electric service sized to meet modern demands. So turn the heater off while you're ironing, using a blow dryer, toaster oven or other electric appliance that draws a lot of power.

Please avoid using portable space heaters on long extension cords.

These can be a fire hazard. If the built-in heaters in your apartment aren't adequate, submit a service request and we'll see what we can do to improve the heat.

If the power turns off in your apartment under the heavy load...

Turn off the electric appliances first. Then find the circuit breakers (in a panel in the wall, sometimes in a closet). Open the door and flip all the breakers off, then on. That should reset the system. Then turn on one appliance at a time.

As always, if something doesn't seem right, or these steps don't solve your problems, submit a service request.
